DEFINITIONS AND PROMOTING FAMILY MEDICINE / GENERAL PRACTICE FOR EUROPE

Family Medicine:

– is clinical specialization and separate academic / scientific                   discipline;

– is the first contact with the health care system;

– provides comprehensive services to all family members,                        regardless of the type of problem, age, sex; 

– provides continuous care over time and in different                                environments; 

– has its own specific epidemiology and specific process used in            making decisions; 

– deals with health problems in their physical, psychological, social      and cultural dimensions;

– provides access to care that is oriented towards the patient and          which is characterized by the creation of close relationship, over       time, between doctor and patient; 

– promoting good health and good condition through appropriate,         safe and effective intervention; 

– seems effective and safe use of resources through care                           coordination, management and referral of patients by                           establishing contact with other professionals;
